Maldives is being presented at the largest travel show in Asia, China International Travel Market (CITM) which kicked off this morning in Shanghai. Fifty Two participants from Twenty Three Companies representing various tourism products of Maldives are attending the show. The Maldives contingent is led by Mr. Shazail Shiyam, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Mr. Haris Mohamed, Acting Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
CITM is jointly organized by the China National Tourism Administration, Civil Aviation Administration of China and Shanghai Municipal People’s Government as an annual event held alternatively in Kunming and Shanghai. This year’s event from 11-13th November is being held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, Shanghai. There are more than 2,500 exhibitors from all sectors of the travel industry including domestic and international tourist organisations, hotels, airlines, travel agencies and other travel related companies. This year the exhibition expects to attract over 10,000 visitors of the travel trade and general public from all over China. CITM provides its partners the opportunity to meet with the strongest buyers from all over China and to establish extensive business ties.
Maldives is showcased at a 203 Sqm stand portraying aspects of the Maldives appealing to the potential Chinese traveler in colourful images set in a contemporary design theme. Particular emphasis is being given to promoting the Visit Maldives Year 2016 parallel to the destination slogan “sunny side of life”. Visit Maldives year and “Sunny side of life” branding are being displayed at prominent locations at the entrance to two main halls of the Shanghai New International Expo Center.
China is the biggest source market to the Maldives taking up 27.5 percent of total market share.
As the number of Chinese outbound market is constantly growing and likely to be doubled by 2020 to reach 234 million, sustaining the market to Maldives is of key importance. 259,679 Chinese arrivals were registered to the Maldives in 2016 from January to September. A constant presence of the Maldives in the Chinese market through platforms such as CITM is vital to sustain the growth of the market.
