Happy World Oceans Day

Happy World Oceans Day

71% of our planet is ocean; and it is what makes Earth truly unique. World Oceans Day is a global event that gathers like-minded individuals to create a platform to encourage solutions preventing litter and plastic pollution for a thriving marine ecosystem.

Kuramathi went full force to mark this annual event with a series of programs to promote awareness while making it a fun interaction. A clean-up dive was organised in conjunction with Rasdhoo Divers and volunteer guests, to collect trash and garbage found lying on the sea bed of our house reef. The contributed effort managed to pull out polyethylene mesh nets, plastic bottles, PVC pipes, and a paint roller worth an estimated 53 kilograms.

Reef Check, an international body devoted to protect tropical coral reefs through means of education, research and conservation, also joined us in today’s program to conduct a survey on our house reef.  Their transect survey dive delved into monitoring coral growth, including recording of substrate, invertebrates, fish life and coral bleaching. This further helps us to regulate any change in our house reef while also becoming an official partner of Reef Check Maldives.

Kuramathi is also hosting a joint campaign with Rasdhoo Divers to oversee the 5th Underwater Photography/Videography competition in light of World Oceans Day. Guests flaunt their talents in three unique disciplines, be it snorkelling, diving photography, diving videography to win exciting prizes to take back home. A judging panel will decide the winners tomorrow at the Champagne Loft in a brave yet difficult verdict of choosing the rightful victor.

We hope our efforts contribute to play our part in saving the oceans, carving a better tomorrow for our future generations.
